Number Sense and Numeration in K-3

Young students need to develop an understanding of numbers, number systems, and related operations. They must also come to understand a complex system of more-and-less relationships, part-whole relationships, the role of special numbers like five and ten, and connections between numbers and real-world quantities.

Know What Your Students Need to Learn

Grasping the concept of number is often difficult and does not come naturally to most students. It is important for students not only to master standard computational procedures, but also to develop number sense.

Your students need to learn to:

  • determine which numbers are larger or smaller than others
  • conduct quick and accurate estimates in computation and measurement
  • detect arithmetic errors
  • recognize place value and the effects of arithmetic operations
  • understand the role of numbers and how they interrelate
  • appreciate the need for numbers other than whole numbers

Explore the Big Ideas in Number Sense and Numeration

You can help your students unravel the mysteries of mathematics by focusing on the Big Ideas in Number Sense and Numeration. These Big Ideas are Counting, Quantity, Relationships, Operational Sense, and Representation.

Each of the learning modules within Number Sense and Numeration deals with a specific Big Idea. Explore them all. You will soon perceive connections between the Big Ideas, and discover ways to instill in your students a deep and enduring understanding of Number Sense and Numeration.
